The Silent Man by Clay Anthony

He knew too much to live!

“You’re in real trouble, pilgrim,” the deputy said. “Bill Thompson was one of the most popular men in these parts. He was as straight as a gunbarrel. Everybody liked him.”

Ormsby’s only reply was a nod as he sat down on his bunk.

“You’ve got just one chance,” Rice said. “You tell everything you know about the Gibb Gang and maybe they won’t fit a hemp necktie around your throat. I cain’t promise you anythin’, but there’s a chance the judge might be lenient, I guess.”

“I’ll speak to no one but the Chief Marshal from Topeka,” Ormsby said.

Rice’s eyes narrowed. “I ain’t good enough for ya?”

“The Chief Marshal,” Ormsby repeated.

“Sassy bastard, ain’t ya? Well, we’ll see how cocky you are when you hear a couple hundred people outside bayin’ for your blood. And it’ll happen, I’ve got no doubt about that.”
